Wine
A sip of istrian terroir
Wine has been produced in Istria for thousands of years, and the region’s winemaking tradition is deeply embedded in its cultural identity. The peninsula’s diverse topography, with rolling hills and coastal plains, together with varied soil types, creates a rich terroir that supports a wide range of grape varieties. Istrian wines are known for their quality and distinctive character, reflecting the unique conditions of the region.
Among the most celebrated Istrian wines is Malvazija Istarska, a white wine made from the native Malvasia grape variety. This wine is known for its fresh, aromatic profile with floral and fruity notes, often described as having hints of apple, apricot and almond. It pairs beautifully with seafood, poultry and vegetable dishes, making it a versatile choice for many meals.
Teran is another prominent Istrian wine, a robust red made from the Teran grape variety. This wine is characterised by its deep ruby colour, high acidity and flavours of forest fruits, spices and subtle earthiness. Teran pairs excellently with Istrian prosciutto, game meat and hearty stews, and is also known for ageing well, developing more complex flavours over time.
